Power Rangers Samurai

It might seem odd but I was a huge Mighty Morphin Power Ranger fan when they first debuted back in 1993. My favorite Power Ranger is Kimberly. Not because she was pink. I’ve never liked pink. Not only because she was a girl. There are two girl rangers in the first season. But because her Zord is the Pterodactyl Dinozord. The other female ranger is Trini and her Zord is the Saber-Toothed Tiger Dinozord. The pterodactyl was simply cooler than the saber-toothed tiger. Imagine my surprise when our two boys stumbled upon a Power Ranger show a few years ago. They fell in love with the show immediately. I was thrilled because I got to relive my love of the show and spend quality time with our boys.

A few weeks ago, Little T burst into the office going on and on about something and I could barely make out the words ranger and new because he was so excited. Drama King strolled into the office and casually says ‘Oh, he’s excited about the new Power Ranger show’. I caught the commercial later that evening and we started counting down the days to the premiere. A couple days ago, I got an email with an offer geared around the new show and knew we had to take part.

A new generation of heroes is about to explode out of the darkness to battle bad guys everywhere!

The new Rangers, Jayden, Kevin, Mia, Emily and Mike, harness the mystical Samurai Symbols of Power to fight evil with the elements of Fire, Water, Sky, Forest and Earth. They are not alone in their struggle. An all-knowing mentor and special spirit animals called Zords aid in their attack against the relentless dark forces.

What are Power Rangers?

Appealing to consumers of all ages and backgrounds, Power Rangers quickly became the most watched children’s television program in the U.S following its introduction in 1993 on the Fox Kids Network. Immediately after its U.S. debut, the popular show was released internationally and has become a global phenomenon airing in more than 40 markets worldwide with more than 700 episodes and counting. Emphasizing the importance of teamwork, fitness, responsibility, and helping others, Power Rangers follows the always exciting and often humorous adventures of ordinary young people who “morph” into extraordinary superheroes.

In the action-packed premiere episode, “The Team Unites,” after Mike can’t anticipate an attack like Kevin and Jayden, he grows frustrated and takes a break from training to meet up with old friends. But when a long-armed monster named Rofer attacks, Mike unsuccessfully attempts to fight him alone, and his friends are injured. Jayden and Mentor explain the hard truth that Samurai Rangers must stay away from family and friends in order to protect them from the dangers that are involved with being a Ranger. Inspired, Mike begins to take his role and training as a Samurai Ranger more seriously. With Jayden’s help, Mike uses his training and creativity to anticipate Rofer’s moves and defeats him.

Our Thoughts

After watching the premiere episode, it’s clear that the new series is going to be a hit in our house. The first episode doesn’t give you much background on the new rangers and relies on the fact that you are familiar with the power ranger struggles and the over-the-top bad guys. It’s nice to see that the show, even after all it’s success, keeps promoting the importance of teamwork, fitness, responsibility, and helping others. And, of course, that kids can do amazing things.

Drama King loves that the red ranger, Jayden, is the leader of the team and he was mad when Rofer knocked Jayden down in the last battle. Little T’s favorite part of the show is always the Megazord battle and this one was no different. He loves how the rangers combine together to make a massive battle machine who always defeats the bad guys.

Costume Dress Up

Halloween costumes get lots of use in our family because not only do we hand them down, the boys use them to role play year round. As you can see in the photo, both Little T and Drama King have dressed up and role played as the blue ranger although Drama King would have preferred being the red ranger. They run around taking turns being the good and bad guys. Sometimes the good guy wins. Sometimes the bad guy wins. But in the end, the boys have a lot of fun and get rid of a little bit of their energy.
