Reading Reflex by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness has a seriously different approach to reading and while at first it seemed too strange, I am slowly falling in love with this method. It’s helping Little T with his spelling and Drama King read his first sentence with little help from me.
I’ve been doing some research on dyslexia and found that dyslexics tend to use assistive technology to help them with the problems they encounter. They see how hard it is for Drama King so I began researching programs and phone apps that can help him. I found a windows application for speech recognition. I am currently using that application to write this entire post.
I have Drama King sit down and try the speech recognition software however he had some trouble with the program. His articulation and silliness prevented the application from correctly identifying what he was saying. However if I get him to go through the set up procedure, I predict the software will work fluently for him.
I also installed and tried out a software called ginger. This software helps you improve your grammar and spelling. When I first heard of ginger, I immediately thought of Robbie. I don’t know how many text messages I have received from him with spelling and grammar mistakes. I am sharing this application with my brother in hopes that it will help with this spelling and grammar mistakes. He’s never been tested for dyslexia but the more I learn through drama king the more I believe Robbie is dyslexic.
Towards the end of the week, Drama king was so frustrated with learning to read that I decided to take next week off from any formal reading lessons.
