This month we’ve taken on a challenge – one that involves blogging through the alphabet. Our theme for the challenge is food and we’re tackling the various uses of vinegar.

White vinegar

If you want to hard boil an egg that has a crack in it you can by adding one tablespoon of vinegar to the water. The egg white wont run out.

Want to use canned fish or some old fish from the freezer. Get two tablespoons of vinegar and rub it all over the fish. let it sit for a half hour and it should have a much more fresh aroma.

If you add a tablespoon of vinegar while boiling fruit for a pie or to can it will help preserve the flavor.

To keep home made mashed potatoes white add a tablespoon of vinegar when you are finished with it and mix it in. That will keep the color from turning.

Add two tablespoons to your pasta sauce to enhance the overall flavor.

Other vinegar

I hardly use balsamic vinegar but it can be wonderful in marinades and some vinegar / oil salad dressings.

You can use red and white wine vinegars to help bring out the flavors of beef and pork.

Apple cider vinegar works on everything. For marinating fish, to vegetables, you name it and it can do it.

Rice vinegar is great for any type of pacific islander food.  If you are using soy sauce and want to add some vinegar to bring out the flavor this is the one to use.
