The Indigo Spell launches with the realization that Sydney is a virgin thus leading her to cast a challenging spell to scry someone she doesn’t know, Ms. Terwilliger’s older sister. Afterwards we learn that Sydney was invited and plans to attend a vampire wedding as part of improving relationships between the Alchemists and Moroi. This left me wondering who’s wedding she was invited to attend as I couldn’t recall any wedding plans for the Vampire Academy main characters and I’ll leave it a mystery for those who haven’t read it.
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch—a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood—or else she might be next.
Traveling to the wedding proves challenging for Sydney and the wedding is just as stressful with her concerns that the Alchemist will learn she doesn’t despise hanging out with the Moroi under her care. Once the wedding ends, the true story begins to unravel as we learn that Ms. Terwilliger’s older sister, Verronica, has been stealing magic and youthful looks from young untrained witches leaving them in a strange vegetative state and Sydney could be next on the list. We also get to see Adrian and Sydney in their first parental roles when they cast a spell at the urging of Ms. Terwilliger that summons a callistana, a serpentine dragon like creature that actually is a type of a demon. This leads to a variety of weird situations for the two as they must help each other while keeping a dragon fed, tracking Veronica, preventing Angeline from getting academic suspension, and helping Eddie figure out the strange going ons between Angeline and Trey. Oh and don’t forget the whole Marcus Finch and the secrets he claims the Alchemist are hiding from her.
The biggest reveal has to be the last few pages when you feel that all has been wrapped up. I cannot wait for the next book, The Fiery Heart, to come out in November and see what trouble lays ahead for Sydney and her crew.
