Horrifa’s Magic Makeover

Horrifa’s Magic Makeover appeals to boys and girls alike. Horrifa is a beautiful witch that dreams of attending a mortal ball however she doesn’t look like the mortals in her storybook. As the story progress, you follow Horrifa as she tries to fix herself only to realize she doesn’t need to change at all because she is beautiful in her own way.

Horrifa, a headstrong young witch, has her heart set on attending a mortal ball, hosted by a handsome prince at his nearby castle. Although her mother, Dragunda, is appalled that a sorceress would aspire to mortality, Dragunda finally agrees to help her fairytale-struck daughter transform herself into a blond haired, blue-eyed beauty, complete with a lacy pink gown. As Horrifa’s Magic Makeover unfolds, Dragunda’s spellbound innovation results in complete pandemonium dashing Horrifa’s hopes to meet the prince of her dreams. Despite her disappointment, Horrifa finally realizes that being true to herself scales, warts and all is more important than her mortal ambitions.

At first glance you might think the book would appeal primarily to girls but this isn’t the case at all. Kids and adults can identify with the story as we’ve all been there at some time during our lives. Horrifa’s Magic Makeover is a great book to start talking to your kids about accepting others despite their differences.

It all comes down to this question, would I recommend the book? You betcha. The book tackles a sensitive topic in an age appropriate manner which allows parents and teachers to open the communication doors for harder subjects like bullying.

An accomplished essayist and novelist, Krueger has been pursuing writing in multiple genres for more than 20 years. In 2011, her first book, Addie Slaughter: The Girl Who Met Geronimo, was published as an Arizona Centennial Legacy Project and was the winner for published children’s literature in the Arizona Authors Association 2011 Literary contest and a ONEBOOKAZ for Kids 2012 finalist.

She used to teach kids with learning disabilities that were in elementary and junior high school. She has been writing for more than 20 years,

I learned Susan L. Krueger, Ed.D., an Arizona-based educator, earned her undergraduate, Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. During a career spanning 32 years, she taught first grade in Holbrook, Arizona, and provided remedial reading instruction to elementary and junior high school students in Flagstaff.
